The United States is certainly an oligarchy. As high as 5 billion could be used on campaigns during the 2016 election cycle. 158 US families/donors have provided over half of the campaign contributions so far.

The median net worth of a Congressman or Congresswoman is now over 1 million dollars. The average net worth (skewed to top) of a Senator is over 14 million, and for a House member it is over 6 million.

In 1986, the bottom 90% of America had 4 times the wealth than the top 0.1%. In 2012, the top .1% had more wealth than the bottom 90% combined.

The middle class is shrinking, poverty is becoming a bigger problem, the top 0.1% is becoming ludicrously rich, you almost always need to be a millionaire to be a House member or Senator, and you need billionaires backing you to win the White House.

The United States is unequivocally an oligarchy, and it has been moving that way for a while now. Citizens United sped the process up.

That with the "debt", its sick, really theres no more point to discuss about politics democrats or republicans inthere.
The only solution would be some kind of revolution, or whatever extreme situation, to get things changed.

Europeans countries are following that path too, but way more slowly, i suppose.

More than just the influence in elections and lawmaking, corruption runs absolutely rampant. The wealthy walk away from crimes as the norm of society and being successful in nearly any capacity is based solely on who you know. Justice and opportunity are very tightly controlled commodities that only the rich can afford to trade in. I really want to stress the level of corruption present, it is colossall, finding a business or politician at any level that doesn't cheat or steal in some way might very well be impossible in the united states.
