Depends how expensive the procedure/medicine is.

Now we have the affordable care act that offers everybody health insurance that is based on their income. So if someone has signed up for it like they should then they will be covered. as far as co-pay goes almost all hospitals have charitable agencies that can help a patient with payment of some if not all of their portion of the bill. Even then the hospitals themselves have very forgiving and easy payment plans that you can set-up to pay your portion.

Even if a person doesn't have insurance of any type there are charitable hospitals in most cities that will treat the person and then work out the bill. The most important part is communication it's also the hardest because for many people they relate it to begging or asking for charity, but really the financial department of the hospital is much easier to work with when a person is pro-active than waiting until afterward. Seeing a total un-reworked invoice from the hospital can put you back in the hospital.

Trust me this is tried and true advice from someone who has had some major hospital stays some that were insured and some non-insured. Communication is KEY. Having an advocate for the person who will follow this advice is probably more important because the person treated, so often will be in a haze of pain or drug induced stupor.
