True. If your life or well being is in stake then you aren't supposed to fast. So in our situation if your work is very demanding physically, then you would have a reason not to fast.

Didn't thousands of people die in Pakistan because of dehydration? Or did I make that up?

a massive heat wave did hit the area recently. lots of people died

Do American Christians generally participate in Lent?

Quote (wiki)
In current Western societies the practice is considerably relaxed, though in the Eastern Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox and Eastern Catholic Churches abstinence from all animal products including fish, eggs, fowl and milk sourced from animals (e.g. goats and cows as opposed to the milk of soy beans and coconuts) is still commonly practiced, so that, where this is observed, only vegetarian (vegan) meals are consumed for the whole of Lent, 45 days in the Byzantine Rite. In the Western Catholic Church, the obligation to fast no longer applies to all weekdays of Lent (40 days), but only to Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. In the tradition of this part of the Catholic Church, abstinence from eating some form of food (generally meat, but not fish or dairy products) is distinguished from fasting. Fasting involves having during the day only one proper meal with up to two "collations",[48] light meatless meals sufficient to maintain strength but not adding up to the equivalent of a full meal.[49] In principle, abstinence is to be observed on Ash Wednesday and on every Friday of the year that is not a solemnity (a liturgical feast day of the highest rank); but in each country the episcopal conference can determine the form it is to take, perhaps replacing abstinence with other forms of penance.[50][51][52]

Present canonical legislation on these matters follows the 1966 Apostolic Constitution of Pope Paul VI, Paenitemini, in which he recommended that fasting be appropriate to the local economic situation and that all Catholics voluntarily fast and abstain. He also allowed replacing fast and abstinence by prayer and works of charity in countries with a lower standard of living. The law of abstinence binds those age 14 or over, and that of fast binds those who are at least 18 years of age and not yet 60

Yes, I don't know any American Christians who don't participate in Lent. The extent to which they fast varies a lot though.

As a matter of custom I usually participate myself even though I'm not a believing Christian.

I should add, though, that the overwhelming majority of Christians I know are Roman Catholic.

A lot of American Christians participate in their own brand of gross, self promotional practice of of fasting.

rather than going about a fast, that is or should be a quiet self denial.

Which typically means a vegan or at least vegetarian diet. They will give up a favorite item for the period of Lent.

But rather than the fast being a quiet (suffering) which you deal with with a smile and no outward sign of difference.

They like to compare and boast about what they are giving up, drawing attention to how hard their (ordeal) or fast is.

This action actually pushes them away from the true relationship that the fast is intended to draw them closer to.

...praises Islam and bashes Christianity in the same thread ...what a clown .

I think it's time for you to get honest and tell us why they either asked you to leave that local church or at the very least why they asked you to stop spreading disharmony . My guess is that you acted the same way there as you do here , dispensing silly advice no one wanted to hear or perhaps gossiping about your fellow church members .

Personally , I'm betting on the gossip angle , that the pastor or an elder tried to correct your behavior and you left in a huff and have been bashing Christianity ever since .

...interesting , never really run into any Lutherans . I went to a Lutheran church just once and it was a tad too formal for my liking .

Lutherans, Calvinists, and Methodists all generally observe Lent.
