we need to stop killing killers, doesn't the irony get to anyone?

The problem is that "slam-dunk" cases like this are used to justify continuing the executions in not-so-slam-dunk cases. When 1 in 25 death row inmates are innocent, the only way to stop real injustice is to take a step back when you have such slam-dunk cases and say "there's a better way."

No one is proud of this monster, but killing him makes it easier to keep killing people who aren't monsters.

...the death penalty process is being refined with the advent of DNA analysis and the pervasiveness of closed circuit video evidence . This case is separate unto itself and does not make it any easier or harder to execute anyone else .

Of course it does, because a society pining for revenge in place of justice perpetuate actual injustices. How is justice not served by putting him in prison for all the rest of his days?

...you are employing hyperbole . I have not witnessed society " pining " for revenge except maybe some of the victims who survived and some family members of the dead which is to be expected .
