I agree. I am okay with polygamy, the only issue I see with it is tax policy would turn into a nightmare, as well as immigration. Claim you have 20 wives and each of htem has another husband and get anybody into the country you want. So there's some issues, but on principle there's no reason to have it banned.
I'm okay with polygamy, too. But the reason why it's not legal in the US is because it is not a part of popular Protestantism. If it was a tenant of Protestantism, I can guarantee you it would be legal in many states.
See, many people in this country are okay with defining marriage within the confines of religion. But only
their religion. And therein lies the problem.
Marriage is a legal contract. Visitation rights, health care benefits, shared financials, etc. That's what marriage (legally) is all about. Emotion, love, etc, is up to whoever is in the marriage to decide how that goes. It's not my business to say that marriage should be filled with love, or compassion, and etc. That's your business.
But marriage has historically been a religious institution in the US, and that's why it took until 2015 for us to stop discriminating gays. A secular government is better than a theocracy, and today was a victory in removing just a little bit more of religion from our government and other people's lives.
