Take professional level sports clubs out of education. Having both in the same institution makes for a lot of conflicting interests.

That would be awful. These teams are one of the few profitable areas at universities. Tuition rates would spike and students would go deeper into debt.

It seems to me that the best thing would be to give the athletes free housing and a stipend for living expenses (in addition to tuition expenses paid).

Because the guys who don't play football get that...

I think it's ridiculous that people get rewarded more for playing games at universities in America than they do for studying academia. Although I'll grant our tuition fees are quite high over here... but I don't know how they compare to the US.

Well I think it's ridiculous there isn't a lambo in my driveway, but economic reality isn't always fair.

the costs redic mostly due to free money aka you fill out a paper take a 50k/year loan and then its backed by the treasury and it cant be dispelled by bankruptcy so you see a lot of people going into majors that don't produce good paying jobs and then cant pay off that 200k loan. removing the safety net and bankruptcy provision you'll see costs force to be lowered would force the schools to offer better data on graduates/employment in their field.

and i'd go with linking the grad rates/ employment to state/fed dollars

currently for profit schools are abusing the free money giving substandard educations offing BSN degrees w/o real clinicals and then having those graduates be unable to transition to workforce and no one willing to hire them.

They get a free ride through academic institutions they otherwise would not be able to afford, they already get paid.

Whether you want to admit it or not, university athletes are workers who provide a necessary and profitable service for their employees. The current model where they are not adequately compensated is unsustainable given the wealth involved with college sports.

Paying them is up for debate.

However, a player being unable to profit off of their name and fame they have obtained through playing sports is complete BS.

Not rlly...

It's perfectly sustainable. Plenty of knuckle-draggers willing to throw a ball around for a free pass through college and uni.

They're compensated fairly by getting educational opportunities, the wealth made possible by paying students who don't have the luxury of a free ride from sports.

This is where we disagree. Universities don't have to be profitable as long as money is spent well to achieve research and academic goals. They are at the service of the public.

Athletes over here can study and sport at the same time. Universities will provide them with lenient schedules whilst they train at their sports clubs.
