Why? There's an extradition treaty in place, it's the right thing to do for him to return to Sweden, and according to Swedish law it's the right thing to hand him over to the Americans.
As a point of perspective there was a good number of death threats to Assange for quite some time after the intial wikileaks from high ranking Govt officials here in the usa (so much for due process and freedom of the press). Time has shown that info he vetted and released to the guardian and to the american media while shining a light on the abuses that have happened in iraq and the spying apparatus, no actual person has been harmed. The intial outrage from some was of the type that claimed american lives where at risk because of the info he released, the proverbial he's outing out our spies and convert operators being put out risk have not panned out. Assange's wikilinks acting as a media outlet that carefully publishes the info other individuals are sending him in the capacity of a whistleblower is admirable and is fulfilling the watchdog aspect of the press that is sorely lacking in the mainstream media.
So of course he's not going to place where the Govt will hand him over willy nilly to the USA govt to stand trial or to become blacksited in some hole. The time since the initial cable-gate release of the controversial documents has shown the fallacy of the "putting american lives at risk and damaging the UsA". We are perscuting the whileblower and wikileaks while war criminals are getting a pass. The action's of the war criminals and unconstitutional spy apparatus is where our derision should lay.

If an indictment has been issued in secret, then Assange could find himself in US custody shortly after landing in Sweden. He could be charged with espionage (the Obama administration has already invoked the law more than all previous US administrations combined), and could be imprisoned for life or executed.

http://www.reuters.com/article/2010/12/03/us-wikileaks-assange-idUSLDE6B21O820101203The rape charges seem pretty trumped up to me, an excuse to grab Assange and then extradite him.
