St. Louis County Police and the Missouri State Highway Patrol will "assume command of the security detail regarding protests" at 6 p.m. (7 p.m. ET), St. Louis County Police said in a statement.

Ferguson Police will remain responsible for "routine policing services" in the city, the statement said.

The takeover comes less than a day after two police officers standing guard outside Ferguson police headquarters were shot in what St. Louis County Police Chief Jon Belmar called an "ambush," spurring a manhunt for those responsible for targeting the line of officers.

"We could have buried two police officers," Belmar told reporters. "... I feel very confident that whoever did this ... came there for whatever nefarious reason that it was."

The shots rang out shortly after midnight, at the end of a protest against the Ferguson Police Department. That department has been under fire since one of its officers, Darren Wilson, shot and killed black teen Michael Brown in August, and more recently since a scathing U.S. Department of Justice report came out documenting a pattern of racial discrimination.

Last night's demonstration was the biggest since the night in November when the Grand Jury verdict ruling was read. For the most part it was a peaceful demonstration as most of them have been. This unforgivable act of cowardice seems to be an act separate from the demonstrators. They seemed to react to it with the same outrage that I feel, the senseless violence is what started this whole affair and more shootings is the last thing that needs to happen on either side.

The only way the tension is going to ease is through peace, and through the committed actions of the State, County, and Local governments in dealing with discrimination, and violent reaction to non-violent behavior. Shooting policemen is not a way to these means. It's just a sad testimony to what our culture has fallen into.

The Obamas and the Brown family did have a fast reaction to the shootings :

I see animals acting like animals, race baiters acting like race baiters, and things to stay relatively the same.

Isn't this what the anti-cop people want? No lynch mob, no peace?

It's a setup by the feds
They didn't get their way with banning the M855 round, so now they killed two cops with it to try and reinforce their next attempt.

the problem is seeing people different than you as animals. Because a cause isn't important to IceMage isn't a reason to dismiss the people who do feel passionately about it by and large the protesters have been about peaceful demonstration, it's outside influence that has been the rotten apple for the most part.

Of course not, why just spit epitaphs when you're smarter than that?

Yeah, with the discrimination that's come to light from the Federal investigation a clean slate may be the best choice, it'll probably never happen of course.

Why can you not say the very same thing about the whole reason this mess started in the first place?
