One could argue i suppose that Macedon was greek before Alexander but i dont think thats correct syntax. Macedon was a subservient slave state to the greeks previous to phillip's reign and alexander expounded on its power exponentially by further reigning in hill clans not at all subject to greek rule. It was only after alexanders power was established that the greeks bowed to him and he took on a greek set of counselors. A few of his lifelong friends were greek but the mostly came from city states paying homage to phillip with hostages.
History of this time period was written by the greeks and they put there stamp on everything they could, i do have a very interresting bio on Alexander if anyone is interested, but its rather dry reading, mostly just comparing secondary sources to find out which ones are accurate and which ones were written to garner favor.
