So I don't read for funsies all that often. However, there are a few books my wifey type is wanting for Xmas! I want to get her a few hardcovers, but there are like a billion editions. What is the difference from edition to edition?

depends on the book. sometimes errors are fixed, sometimes new stuff is added, sometimes stuff is removed. if you want to look for the author's intention, find an abridged version. the publisher often asks for changes. sometimes they scrap really good stuff, other times the book is super slow and they improve it by removing junk
