Just placed an order for the following books (I just finished The Essential Plotinus & Gandhi's Autobiography [Seeking Truth]):

Godel, Escher, Bach: An eternal..
The Art of Happiness (10th)
Republic Plato (Thomas Taylor)
Siddahartha (New Directions)
Nicomachear Ethics (Irwin)
Beyond Good & Evil
Zen & Art of Motorcycle Maintenance
Mediations (Hays)
The Obstacle is the Way
Letters from a Stoic (Seneca/Campbell)
Mans Search for Meaning
Montaigne Essays
Emerson Select Essays
Ishmael: Adventure of..
Being Peace
Jonathan Livingston Seagull
If you meet the Buddha on the Road, Kill Him
Walden (Thoreau)
Discipline & Punish (Foucault/Sheridan)

My question to you:
  • Am I missing any obvious good/important reads?
  • Would you recommend a different translation of a book over the one(s) I have?
  • Do you have a strong opinion about any of the above titles (good or bad + explain)?
  • Are there ones that you recommend that I read prior to others?

Thanks for your help :)

I'm missing some Dostoyevsky if you haven't already read some.

Oh and Bulgakov, Master and Margarita is great!

Dostoyevsky - good call!
As for Master & - isn't this a purely fictional piece? I may have misunderstood the discussion I overheard about this book, so please correct me if I'm wrong :)

Thanks again for the Dosto reminder! :hail:

It is fictional but the story is a strong satirical commentary on the Stalin-era Soviet Union.

Some selected works of Kant may be a good idea alongside some of that philosophy - as a primer/contrast for Nietzsche/Foucault and contrast for the Nicomachean Ethics.

If you have the constitution for it, I would recommend front loading the serious philosophy to have better tools to tease out meaning from the less structured works.
