I know that this computer isn't very decent, but I'm looking at getting it suitable for some less demanding games while streaming
Dark souls 1 and maybe 2 would be the most demanding games played.

Mother board = m3n78-vm
4G ddr2 ram (probably won't upgrade this)

Was looking at a phenom ii x4 9850 black edition for 48$
that and whatever video card would not be bottlenecked.

I wasn't sure how well the x2 6000+ would handle with a video card upgrade so the quad core seemed like a reasonable upgrade

Thanks for any info!

Don't go for that ancient Phenom quad core, it's garbage. You'll be wanting to buy a whole new system if you're going to stream even Dark Souls.

E: Keep your athlon over the phenom.

EE: If you want to get that system fairly nice, you can get a Phenom II x6 1055t 95w and overclock it a little.

May as well buy this and upgrade your ram to DDR3

This computer is just something i have kicking around that i want to pretty much put as little money as possible into making perform better than a mobile amd a6 apu laptop.
The person that will be using it doesn't have money so i'll probably be buying whatever gets put into it.

probably will only be running games at 1366x768 at most, not necessarily on max settings of course. Its not for someone who is a hardcore gamer, they stream recreationally.

I had toyed with the notion of upgrading to an am3 board but i really have to keep this in the 80$ range with 3bay prices.

Drop $35-$50 on a Phenom II x4 965 (I see one now for $30 with $5.95 shipping). Throw the remainder towards a used HD Radeon 6670 or 7750. Should be around $80 altogether.

E: Possibly an R7 250.

Unfortunately the 965 appears to close for around 80$ =/

definitely gonna watch that ones price though.

I wish i knew more about older processors =(.

I was looking at a 6670 and an athlon ii x3 or one of the cheaper x4's if they would perform better(though i read that the x3 460 was much better than the low x4's)
.. this would cost about 80$ to put together(i realized today that the heatsink was installed but it was indeed missing the processor.

Overclock the current processor as much as you can, my guess is you can reach 3.3ghz-3.5ghz, just ensure you're using a 3rd party heatsink. Push for an R7 250, you should be able to stream at low settings 480p at 40ish fps.

E: Low budget on an older system is already a lost cause.

EE: the absolute best thing to do would be buying that 3bay motherboard+cpu combo, it's still comparable to some of the newer FX series CPU's.
