I always got charmander and spent the first hour or so leveling him up in the first patch pf grass I could find. It would normally be level 18 by the time I got to brock. It would be a charizard by the time I'm at misty.

The next pokemon I would get is gastly, then a HM mule and Finally the 3 legendary birds.
