Some time last year I was walking to my apartment from the grocery store and on the way home I was stopped because I matched the description of someone who had just robbed a car. The cop requested my ID and asked me what I was doing. I told him I didn't have my ID on me because my wife just wanted me to get her ice cream so that's what I was doing (showed him the ice cream), and brought just a tiny bit of cash for it. I didn't even have the receipt for the ice cream because I threw it away like I usually always do. t said you are more than welcome to come back to my apartment and I can show you my ID if you wish. He let me go without ever really verifying who I was. I truly do sometimes wonder if I was black, or had shitty clothes, or some factor triggering bias, how that same event could have happened.
Well, if being black or having shitty clothes on matched the description of the suspected robber, you may have faced more questioning. Otherwise, it basically comes down to the attitude you give the cop.
