It's one thing to be an addict and do drugs in your private property away from the publics eye.

It's anorher to get CAUGHT with illegal substances in public. Be it a seller or a user.

Forcing them clearly isn't working. Know what is? Portugal.

And you you seriously implying that because SOME people need to be "forced to get help," that you need to hold onto your busted ass tool of force for everyone, when it fails far more people than it helps?

...Portugal is a non-starter on this issue .

Portugal is a shining example of a comprehensive approach to the problem. Did they legalize anything? No they did not. They simply took the focus off punitive measures.

Legalize all drugs
Focus on domestic production
Drug shops
Taxes aimed at rehab, poverty, education
Cleaner, pure, and consistent drugs being circulated
Cheaper drugs in general

-Removes shady and violent distribution from both here, and multiple violent industries from the south and other parts of the globe. So we stop our funding of violent gangs, and that helps both us and foreigners who are harmed by them in their homeland.
-Users now dealing with products and mixtures in which they know what is in it, rather than guessing and hoping for the best each time you use.
-Allows us to educate users before they use (a shop could require a user to at least once, learn things dealing with the drugs they buy. Real risks, How to use, How NOT to use, things to look out for..etc, rather than "This drug is bad, don't use it..Or else!" Information on rehab, etc
-Gives users a safe place, when it comes to harder drugs. Needles for heroin users, a place for them to come to, etc
-Creates a massive domestic industry

Most of the real hard drugs, are unappealing to the masses anyways. And the removal of the "DON'T PUSH THE RED BUTTON" type of discouragement (encouragement) just makes it so much more unappealing.
I really do not see how much worse legalizing and cleaning up hard drugs would be, or how people think it would be worse.

...Portugal has an homogeneous population of only 10 million , they can not be used as a comparative model to the United States .

Sure, curtural differences may be at play also, but there's no denying what they did worked remarkably well.
