The basic point put forth in this video is that Islam does not support democratic ideals. Is this true or not? If so, how do you change the second biggest religion in the world?

He opens up the video btw, with saying that liberals don't support liberal ideals. I agree. Many people in America do not support freedom of speech. A lot of people think when you go home your employer should still have control over what you say.

Democracy is a flawed system

e/ funny video. Ben Affleck is dumb as fuck. He honestly doesn't get the argument being put forward. He's too offended to even listen.

Nobody thinks that. Bill Mahr seems to be able to say controversial things without getting fired, I'm a liberal and I'm okay with that.

I mean is he really defending Imus calling the Rutgers womens basketball team a bunch of 'nappy headed hoes'?

I love how you libertarians worship the free market until it does something you don't like. People being fired for stuff their employer doesn't like is part of the free market. If you want job security, start a union. Ugh.

Yes, Islam and Democracy likely don't go together. Islam means 'submission' and the principles of Democracy self-determination and the right to seek happiness, pretty much the opposite sentiment of 'submission'. That is why we separate church and state.

There are two cities, the city of man and the city of god. They only connected during the medieval times in the great experiment of theocracy after the fall of Rome. Before and since they've been separate and with good reason. It has served us well, Islam hasn't had that separation and they are worse off for it.

I don't think democracy is needed, or even helpful, for a peaceful society. I don't think Islam is wrong because it is anathema to democracy... I think it is wrong because it destroys people's freedoms based on a lie and teaches bigotry and hatred. Much like Christianity. The two religions aren't that different in my eyes... just that there is, as Maher was saying in the video, a larger acceptance of and adherance to the fundamental teachings of Islam than there is to the fundamental ideals of christianity. Proportionally at least.

I can't see an alternative to democracy in an educated society.

But we are not an educated society. There are too many idiots to let the mob rule.

This is all well and good but what about Islam? What can be done about a huge religion that is anti freedom?

Bill Maher is a hyperbolic reactionary. He's inkanddagger with a large audience.
