Yes, their profit margin is investing premiums. The same premiums that are used for payouts. Guess what? With large payouts you need large premiums. Do you think they just magically get a better investment return on their premiums every time they pay out?

Insurance companies make (or keep) their money by counter-suing when they actually have to pay out a settlement, to recoup their losses entirely or lessen the blow.
