I literally have a program on my 4 year old computer that would STOMP the best player in the world. It would never lose, ever.

well i can beat several average chess programs as well and i am a mediocre player, the point to learn games like chess or go is not to win the game, its to improve numberless of skills and having fun at the same time.

what do you think the goals of education should be?

Increased knowledge and understanding of fundamental concepts (with a very large emphasis on science and analytical philosophy) as well as the development of practically relevant skills in modern society with an emphasis on future relevance (for example, computer programming). I guess that's a good start.

Look, I'm all for playing chess, I play myself and think it is fun and probably produces intellectual benefit, but I'm sure as shit not going to advocate forcing all students to play it.

i don't expect to win but i'd be interested in tackling that computer program of yours

Sure I'll have to redownload it since I reformatted my PC recently, I'll let you know when it's done.

I should have specified that i was more talking about kids, being a teacher i know how important is to motivation is important for better results with them. More advanced school is another thing, someone who study in medicine should not need motivation but just concentrate to be efficient.

I think that's a good start but there needs to be education on how to interpret data. People shouldn't just watch fox news and then go around repeating what they heard. There should be a critical thought process going on asking why am I being fed this information and am I getting the complete and accurate story.

When you have significant amounts of 911 truthers and birthers you have a serious problem.

i am unsure if school should be mandatory at all, but i would put a game like chess or Go in priority before some other actual disciplines for 6-12 year old range (idk how you call that degree in english)

For people who make threads like this, school would be a waste of resources and would be a negative for society, for everyone else it should be mandatory though.
