i suggest avoiding the Grisha series. I bought the first two on sale, but nothing happens for most of the books.

chronicles of the necromancer (6 books- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chronicles_of_the_Necromancer )
The Ascendant Kingdoms Saga(2 out so far, 3rd comes out next year)(this author pumps out books about once a year so dont have to wait to long if reading her current works)

lightbringer series(3 books so far, 3rd just came out) & night angle trilogy http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brent_Weeks
Kingmaker, Kingbreaker series
fishermans children(takes place after kingmaker/kingbraker)
blight of mages (backstory of the 2 above of how it all started)
godspeaker http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karen_Miller
karen miller is a slow pace book but very detailed

King Rolen's Kin (4 books) by rowena cory daniells
Outcast Chronicles(3 so far, i've yet to read past book 1 -jsut learned more were out-)

here is a list of books ive read and personally love...some more than others. all are fantasy and some are darker than others in the story line but definitely worth looking into if like a good story and love fantasy books

Have you tried Lies of Locke Lamora?
It's got fantasy elements but isn't all in your face about it.
It's also dark and very, very good.

First Law Trilogy by Joe Abercrombie (the standalone follow up books are pretty decent as well. The Heroes is my favorite).
