"They cited a World Food Organisation estimate that a third of food products on the planet that are still fit for human consumption are currently “lost or wasted”."

1/3 of all produce wasted

could go to the hungry

no reason to not eat it over > trash

Yeah, and by the time the food and fruit is arrived/shipped they would still eat it?

Looks like that flew over someone's head this morning.

In all fairness to the French who first invented this technology. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nicolas_Appert
Charities could make efforts to preserve these foods nearing spoilage by cooking and canning them.

Should take no more than a few hours to get it from the supermarket to hungry people ...

You're acting like you're going to ship it from New York to California ...

You have the local food bank pick it up and have a nightly give out in troubled neighbourhoods or at the food banks location ... Sure the people can't save it ... But there are plenty of people with instant hunger needs .

I don't understand what's so complicated about food is better off in people than in a trash bin .... Supermarkets don't keep food until it's rotten ... It's usually thrown out a day or two before it's no good.

Basically any food a supermarket will no longer keep out to sell, must be given to charities if it is still fit for consumption but just not nice enough to sell.

I want to be against it in terms of "freedom" for companies to do what they wish with their own products....but this just makes too much sense....grocery stores throw away so much here in Canada and the us, id like to see a similar piece of legislation

So the grocery stores wont throw food and will donate it?
Sounds nice.

Rotten food given to Charities?! That logic! Even better, rotten fruit! Yummmmmyyyyyyyyyyyy!

alot of processed / packaged foods with 'best before' dates can still be eaten long after the suggested day

this is great, i hope other countries follow

I dont know about the food markets in USA, but in france we got one relatively big ones lets say every 10 or 20 kilometers (and maybe 40 km. far out of town)
So the distance isnt really problem if locally managed...

Food market close at 8h pm and usually never sell food with an "end date" occuring the current day; all that give time to move and to eat most of the food imo.

Basically Homeless people will become obese.

I imagine it will be the duty of the charities to collect the food....

only seems fair....

If that's the case, it seems like a good idea. The charities are practically saving stores the trouble of throwing things away. Seems like it'd be a win-win.

This is also like making large companies recycle or properly dispose of waste. Once the logistics are covered, it won't be a cost issue to the stores if all they're doing is putting food in a different bin.

Honestly, I was expecting to open this thread to find out the French did something completely derpshit. I'm glad it's not the case.

...this is an insult to the poor . Supermarkets here already donate vast quantities of non-perishable items to food banks but to tell the poor " here you go , eat the rotting and spoiling fruit we wouldn't touch " is reprehensible .

I support this law just to see how it actually works out.
