Do more people play SC or HC?

What is more fun for more solo play?

I suggest playing SC. alot cheaper and easiesr to buy gear and play with people.

If u plan on soloing. Start with a rogue or fighter.
These items is what i wud suggest you to buy as a start.
If fighter, Use EE (Enhanced Effect) Leather/Scale armors. For a example.

Magical tanned leather armor
Physical Defense: 6 to 20
Magical Defense: 5 to 22

+59% Enhanced Effect

Go with Enhanced Effect Axes, tier3 and so forth.
for example:
Mythical iron axe
Level Req: 5
Damage: 43 to 51

+57% Enhanced Effect
+81 Max Mana
+1 Magic Luck
+2% Physical Damage Reduction
+3% Mana Skin

And finally Either buy strength or dex charms.
That will allow you to do more damage.

using EE armors will allow you to tank and be able to solo.
Also, Make sure you start with 70-75 vita. This will give u crap load of health and help you tank.
Also, As a skill i suggest Maxing Powerstrike. if you plan to solo Powerstrike probly the best thing for you to start.

do I want to level strength or dex for axes? Are axes better than swords or daggers?

U can level strength or dex for axes. they are 50/50 added damage. So you can add either 1.

If you can find a dagger set go for that.

Feeder - dagger/axe
samuri- dagger
paladin- axe
monk - dagger
ninja- dagger
warlock- staff (caster)
headhunter - axe
alch- no weapon

Thats the weapon class that is suggested
