This teacher should be fired and if I were a parent, I would remove my child from this school. This is so much worse than forcing a child to read a religious book in school.

What do you think should be done to the teacher?

Based upon my personal feelings towards the bible or based upon what I would want done because of the teachers blatant disregard for freedom ?

That teacher is in the wrong, I don't see any problem with a children reading fiction during FREE READING.

Pornography should not be allowed in our schools.

There are much milder books put on the banned books list. Until we address that the bible is fair game under those same standards......

Seems like genre control is within her power as a teacher.

Law apparently agrees given the information in the article i read.

another one of those situations where the word "free" confuses and enrages people.

While the teacher may have genre control, banning books that are religious in nature is highly controversial. As a teacher, you should choose the less controversial action. She showed a serious lack of judgment here.

Free reading implies reading whatever you'd like, so if that's the implication there shouldn't be any restrictions on the bible....unless the child is using this time to preach or promote his ideas to other students, in which case the student should be permanently expelled.
