Jean Sibelius was a genius
definitely. his compositions rely heavily on the Finnish national epic, folk tradition and early Finnish nationalism which really bring light into what he was trying to portray.
Finlandia was actually somewhat of a political song when Finland was a part of the Russian Empire, and its' lyrics when sung (such as hymn 26's "O' look Finland your day dawns upon you - the threat of night has been banished") as a rough translation actually refer to Finnish independence from the Russian Empire during a time in which Finland was a part of the Russian Empire.
ofc all of this goes great with the painter Axeli Gallén-Kallela's works of art.
