BKK69 Adware Removal Guide

(Disclaimer, always remember to back up anything important before doing any removal type steps. These steps can also be done in safe mode with networking. Here is how to boot into safemode. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/using-system-configuration#1TC=windows-8 or http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/start-computer-safe-mode#start-computer-safe-mode=windows-vista )

Step1.
*Please download AdwCleaner by Xplode and save to your Desktop. Link here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/adwcleaner/
*Double click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool.
*Click on the Scan button.
*AdwCleaner will begin to scan your computer for adware.
*After the scan has finished...
*This time click on the Clean button.
*Press OK when asked to close all programs and follow the onscreen prompts.
*Press OK again to allow AdwCleaner to restart the computer and complete the removal process.
*After rebooting, a logfile report (AdwCleaner[S#].txt) will open automatically (where the largest value of # represents the most recent report).


Step2.
*Please download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop from http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/junkware-removal-tool/
*Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista, 7, or 8; instead of double-clicking, right-click the filename JRT.exe and select "Run as Administrator."
*The tool will open and start scanning your system.
*Please be patient as this can take awhile to complete, depending on your system's specifications.
*On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.


Step3.
*Please download SUPERAntiSpyware from http://www.superantispyware.com/ to your Desktop.
*Double-click on SUPERAntiSpyware.exe to run the tool, and follow the prompts to install the program.
*Once installed, click on “Check for update,” found under program version box.
*Now select Complete Scan under the text "Select Scan Type," now click Scan Your Computer.
*Make sure your drive and any other drive you use is select Under Scan Location except Optical Storage which should be deselected by default.
*Now select High Boost under the text Scan Boost; this will use more CPU to speed up the scan, but your computer will be slower during scanning.
*Make sure Scan inside .ZIP archives is selected; also, make sure Unwanted Program Pre-Scan is also checked.
*Now start Complete Scan.
*It may bring up a message about uninstalling Potentially Unwanted Programs; go ahead and uninstall what it finds.
*When the scan is complete, make sure everything is checked, and select Remove Threats; it will now bring up a message asking to reboot your computer; go ahead and click reboot now.


Step4.
*Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (aka MBAM): http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free to your desktop.
* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Threats (will prompt to reboot your computer go ahead and click reboot now).


Step5.
*Remove add-ons in Chrome, Firefox, and Internet Explorer.
*For Chrome click the three line icon on the top right corner of Chrome and navigate to Settings.
*Select extensions under the text Chrome, this will bring up all Google extensions. Now locate any add-on that adware (e.g., shopcoupons) or anything that looks suspicious. If you are not sure of the extensions, Google the name.
*Now go back to Settings, and click on Manage search engines; make sure the search engine that you use is the default one (e.g., Google) and delete any ones that you do not want by hovering over it and clicking the X; this will delete that setting.
*Now under Startup text click on Set pages and make sure the search engine (Google or what you want) is the default one and click the X on the ones you do not want.
*For Firefox, click on the drop-down list (top left corner of Firefox) and select Add-ons. Now select extensions, and locate any add-on that adware (e.g., shopcoupons) or anything that looks suspicious. If you are not sure of the extensions, Google the name.
*Then click Remove.
*Now bring up the Firefox Options box (same place as Add-ons) and make sure the home page is what you selected.
*For IE, click on the gear-like icon on the top-right corner of IE and select Manage add-ons; now locate any add-on that adware (e.g., shopcoupons) or anything that looks suspicious and disable it. If you are not sure of the extensions, Google the name.
*Navigate to Internet Options and be sure your home page is what you selected.

Step6.
*Open Control Panel and click Programs and Features (Windows Vista or 7). Click Uninstall a program . Windows 8 will be under Programs, then click Uninstall a program.
*Go through the list and uninstall any program that looks like adware (again, google the name if you are not sure before uninstalling).
*If you cannot uninstall the program, move to step7.

Step7. (If program will not uninstall properly)
*Download and install Revo Uninstaller Free from http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/revo-uninstaller/
*Double-click Revo Uninstaller to run it.
*From the list of programs, double-click on the listed program to remove it (if it exists).
*Also check the list of programs for programs with names like “Search-Protect” or “SweetPacks” -- anything that sounds like adware; google the name if not sure.
*When prompted if you want to uninstall, click Yes.
*Be sure the Moderate option is selected, then click Next.
*The program will run; if prompted again, click Yes.
*When the built-in uninstaller is finished, click on Next (sometimes this may not run and will skip to the next step).
*Once the program has searched for leftovers, click Next.
*Check the items in bold only on the list, then click Delete. You may have to expand some folders by clicking the "+" mark.
*When prompted, click on Yes and then on Next.
*Click on Select all, then click Delete.
*When prompted, select Yes, then Next.
*Once done, click Finish.


Step8.
*Open a command prompt window; in Windows 7, click on Start; type “cmd” in the Search box at the bottom and click on cmd.exe in the results. Now type msconfig. Now select Startup. Go through the list of programs and disable the ones that sound like adware; Google names if not sure before disabling. In Windows 8 or 8.1, type Win+X and then click on Task Manager. Click Yes to the User Account Control message that appears.
*Click on the Startup tab. Go through the list of programs and disable the ones that sound like adware; Google the names if not sure before disabling.

You Have Finished!
*Remember, Google is your friend. Bleeping computers is a nice site to go to for guides and programs for removing infections. Remember what you download can be bundle with unwanted toolbars and other programs, so be sure to read before clicking “Next” when installing software and uncheck the boxes that install other software or toolbars.
*For browser protection, go to adblockplus.org and download their add-on. This will remove annoying ads on websites and videos.

Removing proxy settings.


(Disclaimer, some adware after removal will leave behind custom proxy settings and will cause your browser to display the proxy server isn't responding or something similar to this. The steps below show how to fix it.)

Removing proxy setting for chrome and IE (they both use the system native settings.
Open Internet Explorer by clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button. In the search box, type Internet Explorer, and then, in the list of results, click Internet Explorer.

Click the Tools button, and then click Internet Options.

Click the Connections tab, and then click LAN settings.
check mark automatically detect settings, and make sure under proxy server "use a proxy server for your LAN (these setting will not apply to dial-up or VPN connection) is deselected.
hit okay.

Setting Google to default setting

click the three line button at the top right of chrome.
select settings.
scroll to the bottom and click Show advanced settings...
scroll to the bottom and under Reset browser settings and click the box.
a popup will display now to reset browser settings and hit Reset.

Removing proxy setting for Firefox.

open Firefox, and on the top left corner my say Firefox with a down arrow click it.
select options. and select the Advance tab, now
select the network tab. and now under connection click settings...
this is where you will select no proxy or use system proxy settings and hit ok.

Set Firefox to default setting

open Firefox, and on the top left corner my say Firefox with a down arrow click it.
select help and select Troubleshooting Information
now click reset Firefox found in the box on the right top hand side.
a popup will now display Reset Firefox. click the box Reset Firefox.

Set IE to default setting
Start Internet Explorer. (Note If you are running Windows 8.1 or Windows 8, start Internet Explorer from the desktop. Changing your settings will affect both Internet Explorer and Internet Explorer that you start from the desktop.)
On the Tools menu, tap or click Internet options. If you don't see the Tools menu, press Alt.
In the Internet Options window, tap or click the Advanced tab.
Tap or click Reset. If you're using Windows Internet Explorer 6, click Restore Default.
will now display a Reset Internet Explorer Settings box.
check mark the Delete Person Setting box and click Reset.


if Firefox or chrome still have issues, may have to uninstall and reinstall.
