You've gotta be kidding me.

>he publicly calls out a terrible bill AND his own party and took a principled stand against it, turning it into a national story

you decide to criticize him for 'allowing' it to pass.. as if he has the power to stop it himself and didn't go out of his way to try to stop this bill.

There are countless ways politicians promote themselves. Their position requires promotion to get in office and to win reelection.
He chooses to grab headlines by making controversial and principled stands against bad legislation.. That is honorable and risky, not a bad thing.
He could easily take safe positions and repeat mindless talking points and let bad legislation like this pass when its convenient to do so. Other so-called conservatives were happy to take that route.

'I'm done tweeting them for the evening. If they insist on voting, I will vote no because it spends to much and there's just too little time to read the bill and let everyone know what's actually in it.

Thanks for sticking with me.

well, did he vote 'NO'? then i agree with you. if not, it's just shameless self-promotion withOUT principles...

well, then he did what was within his power to NOT allow it to pass. plus, he apparently made a genuine effort to actually read it (which is more than i suspect the vast majority of senators on both sides did), despite the outright ridiculous practice of distributing copies just hours before the expected vote, AND he drew public attention to it.
and although i'm sure i'd disagree with most of his reasons, i don't know how anyone could come to the conclusion he did NOT act principled and merely did it for self-promotion. that might play a role, sure, but in cases like this i think public awareness is the greater good that 'justifies' it...

allowed it to pass nonetheless. in the end, he's a self-promoter and not as principled as he tries to portray himself.

He could have done more than sit and tweet to his followers.
