you decide to criticize him for 'allowing' it to pass.. as if he has the power to stop it himself and didn't go out of his way to try to stop this bill.
There are countless ways politicians promote themselves. Their position requires promotion to get in office and to win reelection.
He chooses to grab headlines by making controversial and principled stands against bad legislation.. That is honorable and risky, not a bad thing.
He could easily take safe positions and repeat mindless talking points and let bad legislation like this pass when its convenient to do so. Other so-called conservatives were happy to take that route.
