Why can't he just be a nice guy?

Nice animals don't kill other animals for fun. It takes malevolence to enjoy killing imo. I even grew up in a hunting family, and my dad never took joy in killing the animals we ate.

That man in the picture is getting no utility for killing that animal, he is doing it for enjoyment. That is morally repugnant. He didn't even hunt the animal, just enjoyed its pain and death.

No, he's a scumbag, he got off on killing another animal. He might be a nice guy, while he is wearing his mask.

If he wants to kill other animals he should have joined the army.

I'm calling bullshit. I live in WV and I've never met a hunter who didn't enjoy hunting. I've also never met a hunter who would starve without the meat. I've also never met a meat eater who would starve without consuming meat.

Enjoying hunting =/= enjoying killing

I liked fishing...I didn't like gutting and filleting them. I liked eating them. Now I keep them in aquariums and are friends with them.

I had buddies in the army that really liked hunting....people. I enjoyed being a soldier. Very different things.

How is killing a deer or squirrel more legitimate than killing a beautiful animal when one doesn't need the meat? It's a sport for people, whether they utilize the remains or not.

We did it because we were very poor and bullets are cheaper than beef.

But intention is the difference. One is purposeful, the other is not. Animals eating each other is pretty natural. Animals that kill just for fun are uncommon. Usually rabid. We should put this guy down just in case he is rabid.

Utilizing the remains is just common sense and good form. Why do hunters emphasize the number of points a deer has? Why do people take pictures with big fish? Sounds like sport to me. Killing an exotic animal is just another notch in your hunter's belt. My good friend's dad was going to go to Russia to hunt a brown bear... and he's been hunting more common animals all his life. It's not about the animal's suffering, it's about the sport of hunting.

Well my biases are obviously showing here. I suppose I'm uncomfortable around wounding and dying people and animals and I shouldn't generalize that to the rest of the species.

However I challenfe it being a sport. In sports the participants know they are playing. In hunting and murdering you pretty much sneak up on animals and people who don't know they are playing a game.

Well, I'm a white suburban kid who has never had a gun pointed at me, but I think this falls along a similar visceral line. Soldiers dehumanize their enemies, and they may come to enjoy the sport of killing the enemy. The extreme(and unjustified) end of that is My Lai, Nisour Square, Mahmudiyah rape, etc.

My former neighbor(who served in Iraq) told me about him and his buddy using an automatic rifle against a deer, totally ripped it apart. That's an example of the extreme(and unjustified) end of hunting.
