Houston is probably similar to PHX where they don't want people walking because they are faster with a cart which allows more frequent start times allowing for more revenue.

Ya I understand the concept and you are probably right but I tried in the middle of the week where there are at least 1-2 empty holes between people.

Prices usually range between $26.00 - $40.00 a round here. With a cart.

I prefer to walk, but not many courses around here allow you to walk unless you are a member.

About 2000 for my year membership. Includes unlimited range access etc.

If I play a non CL course it usually runs around 50-90$ for the round

I work on the grounds maintenance side of things. I'm an assistant superintendent at the moment.
Just like club pros play at eachothers courses for free... Superintendents do the same for eachother. I can play where I work all I want so long as its not too busy. And I try to hit up another course once a week. When i go out of town, I can usually get in touch with the super at the nearest course and get comp'd. I always invite them to come play our course when they are in the area too.
Most times its free, sometimes its a cart fee or caddie fee only, sometimes its at a discounted rated. My co-worker is playing all the brandon courses this week and is only paying %25 green fees
