For a winter car kit, I suggest the following things.A small knife and a bic lighter or strike anywhere matches. A coffee Can(if you can find one), or a mason Jar, candles the tall kind like 12 inches tall about 1/2" to 3/4" in diameter. you can cut these candles in half or thirds, and use the can or jar to focus the heat, this is handy if you crash or run out of gas or whatever, heat is important in the winter if you are stranded. I also suggest some kitty litter, like a smal bag, because you can use it for traction if you get stuck. You can also use branches from trees, if you break them up and put them around your tires so they have something to grip instead of the snow. A jack is always useful too, you can jack the car out of a hole you burned with your tire and push it over onto flat ground,or jack it up and put sticks in the hole, this has saved me before.I like to keep a wool blanket and my carharts and boots too, but some people dont have room for that, so instead buy 3 or 4 of those solar reflective blankets, you can fit 20 in an average glove box so they don't take up much room, and they can be handy for more than staying warm. you can use them for collecting water and many other things.I like to keep a few packs of peanuts and cashew in my glove box too, nuts are high in protein and can keep you going in an emergency. Also, keep a few bottles of water in your trunk, they can freeze, but you can thaw them with the candle easily. We can get more detailed some time later, but these are the basic things I would suggest anyone to carry in a winter scenario that can be purchased for like $10 at most if you just buy dollar store shit.

i can vouch this, there are many items that are a must for a car you never know whats going to happen

hate seeing people go on various trips through rough country wearing flip flops the most.

Better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it is my motto. People always laugh about how much shit I have in my truck and car, but they are all happy when I bust out something to take care of a problem when we are out and about. It usually changes their tune after that happens.

I went in southeast Montcalm county in Evergreen township. DNR had 2 weekends of extra hunts in Montcalm and Ionia county to check for more Chronic Wasting Disease. They checked 27,000 heads and found 29 with CWD.

I guess they consider it a success, but the disease is still out there.

whats the deal with cwd? isnt it just a natural population curb that goes on similar to how distemper controls raccoons?

or is this an entirely negative or unnatural disease?

cwd occurs everywhere last i checked. especially in areas where the yotes cant get in and the deer breed like rabbits

Here we have had legal baiting for years and years. When I was a kid growing up, my dad would buy a pickup truck load of carrots and we would make a big pile and have a ton of deer eating off it. It think it's a natural disease, it is a saliva borne disease and they get it from eating stuff another deer has gotten its slobber on, or licking the same salt block or branch etc, or even eating grass another deer pissed on. It basically shuts them down and is always fatal. The problem we had here is so many people baited with such big piles, every pile was a cwd breeding site from diseased deer infecting it. We banned baiting for about 5 years and in the last 5 years are allowed a 2 gallons of bait with it being spread out over a minimum of a 10x10 area from Sept 15th to Jan 1st. They request you dont put bait in the same area and only bait while actively hunting. With the rise again I can see baiting be banned again. I don't mind and don't bait them, because I hunt the runways between bedding grounds and natural food and water sources anyways. The big smart bucks are very rarely seen eating off a bait pile and if they are its usually in the middle of the night when you can't hunt anyways. We have plenty of predators beside cars here. Bears, cougars, wolves, coyotes and bobcats can all take a deer down, but we do have a bunch of deer too. It's nothing to see 30-50 of them eating in a field this time of year at dusk or daybreak.

Big snowstorm today, we should have a couple feet on the ground by the time it's over. I took the day off work and am going to go see if I can find where the deer are yarding up and get some pictures.
