thanks again to everyone.  I've switched to 1h shield now, is sss viable? if not, what should I swap with it?
also, someone mentioned (sorry, I forgot who) that I should swap out the dash (which is on my right click) - how does everyone get out of tight spots then?

I get out of thighspots with thunderclap and smart positioning. If the situation is too tight (like waller/jailer and 3x arcanes coming) I use extented serenity and hope that gives me enough time to reposition.

Here is actually my monk: http://eu.battle.net/d3/en/profile/Parsa-2474/hero/51372 gear is not very special but I hardly ever die in a3.

I use enchantress as follower because it gives some extra armor and ias, it is alot better than scoundrel for a shield monk due to the armor buff.

how is it now? I'm still pretty dependent on sss for tight spots, but swapped dash for breath w/15% dmg (helps a lot!)

I've got sub par gear but have little trouble in A3, zero in A2 (except very rarely). I depend on melting face and run speed. The shield is a big part of what makes me tanky enough to stand there melting faces for the 10 seconds it takes, so I'm sure going that route has helped. On the SSS side, I'm considering switching something out for SSS or Serenity, because when I DO get overwhelmed, I don't have a real "oh shit" button except breath of heaven + pot. Just not sure what I'm gonna replace...probably move DR > Foresight to replace CW > Mangle and put one of those 2 o shits there. You're always gonna have tight spots, but being able to deal with em totally negates them, so don't worry about being "dependant" on SSS or the like. If they die and you don't, you win, nn change skills unless you're bored ^_^

hello again -
I have another ? to ask: is it worth lowering crit chance to get crit dmg?

http://us.battle.net/d3/en/profile/alyu314-1697/hero/19291579

here is a screenshot of my detailed stats, but the main thing is 36% crit chance and 148% crit dmg - and I'm not sure if I should drop say, 9% crit chance to get 50some crit dmg (swap gloves and alt ring). any suggestions?

50%chd isn't nearly enough to justify losing almost 10% crit...remember, crit is what makes chd effective, so it scales together. You are lowering the effectiveness of chd by dropping crit. That's not to mention that monks such as this are dependent on LOTS of crits, not necessarily big numbers. More crits = more cyclones. And please get rid of NDE.

no money for a loh weapon, and I die every elite pack in a3 and above, so I need nde, unless I can up my dps enough.

then you cant do act3.

you NEED loh. only time you can get away with low to no loh is if ur doin 100k unbuff. But even then @ 100k unbuff dps...id still suggest the standard 1k loh + life steal combo so you can sit in battle and not have to rely on serenity cause when you party play in full game, certain elites are still packin quite some hp with multiplayer buff (despite 1.04 nerf, they still do have some hp on certain mobs).

put on a loh weapon offhand, and looking into a mainhand one...

http://us.battle.net/d3/en/profile/alyu314-1697/hero/19291579

also have a basic question - why is the ring I have equipped on now better than the one in my stash?

Is 10-23 dmg equal to a lot of damage, compared to increase in dex and crit chance?
