I'm not far in but I really like way of hundred fist for normal mob AoE attack, I switch to fists of thunder for single mobs with the thunderclap rune wich makes you teleport on short distances, great for moving to an enemy to another.

For spirit using technique lashing tail kick with vulture claw rune for increased dammage, great when you're surrounded. I sometime use the cyclone strike before using lashing tail to group ennemies togheter before sending them back out.

Maybe it's because of my poor gear, but I happen to come in near to daeth situations and since you're meleeing as a monk you take more hits, so i take the healing skill (since potion cooldown are so long), the circle of skorn rune adds some nice holy dammage.

Exploding palm is another great skill, use it when a big ennemy is about to die and it'll dammage all ennemy when it dies (if the spell is still active).

I have yet to use serenity, but I can see it's usefullness when you're sourrounded and about to die, definitly recommended for hardcore.

For passives I hopped through them all, the increased movement speed is nice, but I don't find it the best passive at start. Resolve can have it's uses, but I'm not too sure on it. Exalted soul is my personnal choice for the moment, it's nice to have a lot of backup spirit for when you're in trouble, helps a lot. Transcendence is what I would take if I would have more survivability problems.

I'm only level 16 so experiment on the later levels!

im not so far with my monk either, hes very fun to play,

heres wat i noticed

if u use a multi attack(its pretty weak to kill bosses with that skill)

if u use a 1 v 1 attack, it sucks at multi killing,

i am in act 3, pretty much can destroy everything solo in 4 player games all the way through so far, even solo'd 90% of belial after my newb group died. i do fist of thunder with the tele rune, the aoe knockback kick, charge with the stun rune, and i pretty much can knock everything off of me with the roundhouse while i pick off stuff with charge. the heal is just gravy when its needed, and 7 sided fist is a godly cd as well. i was really torn which class to pick and i definitely got it right. this game is fun as hell so far

I got lvl 24 today, I'm using this build: http://us.battle.net/d3/en/calculator/monk#bZYifS!XY!aaa.a
Normally the battle would be something like this:
1- Sweeping Wind
2- Cyclone
3- Blind
4- Some hits.
5- Round house kick.

If it's not over, do it again.
You can change Wind for Dashing Strike, it works great to.

Lv 35 here, Using Teleport punch for everything but bosses (hundred fist with attack speed rune swapped), aoe kick, circle of heal or serenity depending if I'm grouped or solo, fire ally, seven sided strike, and mantra (usually conviction). Destroy everything in norm and through act 1 NM so far.
