I agree that 8 has one of the worst battle systems. But the plot is amazing. I don't get why everyone thinks you need to grind, or stand there drawing forever, because you don't. There are probably a few rare magics to do that on, but that's it.
And I do think that 7 has one of the worst plots. I wouldn't say it's a terrible RPG, but I agree that it is the most overrated RPG probably of all time.
You get magic WAY faster by just playing Triple Triad (the cardgame).

Was longer than 3 hours more like 7 considering I didn't use a walkthrough .. To much boring.
Wrong I played them both a fair amount of time. 8 sucked.
9 is my all time favorite for the story.. The characters are cool except maybe the knight with girly eyelashes..lol
And the plot was good. I will agree when most ppl will say 9s battle system sucked...it may seem slow but all in all the game is still beatable without cheating or grinding within twenty four hours
If you can't remember the names of final fantasy characters of your 'all time favorite', I'd say you haven't played Final Fantasy enough in general.
Also steiner was a clown when it comes to disc 1/2, but turns into a noble, respectable knight after his inner struggle is deceided. From that point onward, he's fucking badass.
FF8's story is way better than FF9's because of, for example, the better character development.
@OP: Replay FF8. you won't regret it. I'm currently replaying FF9 because I recently beat 8 but I might stream a replay of FF8 while going for 100% completion. Biggest issue I have with FF9 is the fact that the battle are REALLY slow. When it comes to waiting for an attack, it can take about 5 seconds before your enemy attacks, while it takes about 3 before you attack when your ATB bar is filled.
