All I meant about no fixed role is aside from their limit breaks, and Rinoa's Angelo, you can junction any and every ability to any and every character; how each and every cast member functions is totally up to you, unlike the earlier 2d Final Fantasies and many the of other Squaresoft releases. I've been watching my friend pour 50-60 hours into VIII and he's just about done with all the sidequests; I can't wait 'til he's at Ultimecia's castle as I agree that it's probably the most wicked end-game dungeon in the franchise.
Yeah that's true about the roles. 7 and 8 seem to be the most "non class based", and they are the most critically acclaimed in the series(ironic). The thing that is interesting about 8 though, is that you can kind of tell what kind of "job" they were trying to make each character though, not only by their limit breaks but also by the weapons they wield. Like Squall is a warrior type, Zell is a monk type, Quistis is a blue mage type, Irvine is a ranger type, Selphie is a black mage/red mage type, Rinoa is kind of a white mage type. It's obviously not as defined as the older games, or like in 9, but I thought it was an interesting take how 8 did it. 7 is like the least traditional FF in that sense lol.
