In this blog, I will show you a step by step guide to creating a partition for your HDD in Windows 7.

Creating a partition can be useful in many ways, some of those include:
  • Separating your operating system from the main HDD
  • Keep frequently used files near each other (Enable faster load times)
  • Isolate and Protect files to make it easier to replace corrupted files

Helpful Information before we start:
  • Windows Home Premium 32 bit requires 16gb of space if partitioning for this
  • Windows Home Premium 64 bit requires 20gb of space.
  • HDD stands for Hard-Disk Drive
  • mb Stands for Megabyte
  • gb Stands for Gigabyte

Step 1: Where Do I start?

We start out in Windows 7 By Clicking the Start Button > Right Click on My Computer or just Computer > Click Manage

Step 2: Your Computer Management Program Window

From here, Click on Storage and then Disk Management

Step 3: Select the Drive you wish to Partition

From here you see all your HDD's on your System. Select which one you would like to partition, In most cases it will be your C: Drive.

Step 4: Setting the Partition

After you choose which Drive you wish to partition you will now want to Right click the Drive at the top and select Shrink Volume

Step 5: Setting the Size

You will now see a window showing you the size of the HDD and the total size you will be able to shrink. From here
you can enter the size you wish to partition.

Remember basic transition rate is 1000mb = 1gb of Space.

Step 6: Creating the Partition

Once you figure out the amount of size you need to partition, enter the values and click shrink. The amount of time this takes
depends on the size you partition, Obviously the more space the longer it will take. It Is very important not to interrupt this
once it has started, Can cause damage to the partition and/or the original HDD

Once it is finished you will see a space that has the amount you partitioned followed by the word "Unallocated." Right
Click this and Select New Simple Volume.

You will now have a setup wizard appear, Fill in the size of the partition you just did and assign the new partitioned drive a
Letter. The letter does not matter, Pick whatever you prefer. Just don't use a letter already used by your computer.

You are almost done :) Just double check NTFS is selected and then just enter a name for your drive. Typically name it whatever
it is being used for.
