How accurate are calipers? I had a friend that has a degree in exercise science and he's a pretty promenant scc measure me out to 14% bf "+/- 3%"

I have a shit load of extra skin from being 300+ lbs, so it's hard for me to feel confident in these measurements.

He measured on my thigh "midway from knee to hip", my pec and my abdomen "1 inch over from my navel".

its semi-accurate in a sedentary population with a LOT of experience as a user. in other words its pretty shit. the thing is that its not actually a skin fold measurement, in order to perform the measure properly you need to pinch properly to measure the thickness of the subq adipose layer beneath the skin. who gives a fuck what the thickness of the actual dermis is. ive had labs using this tool and most people are dumbfucks and just pinch your skin and measure it, like bitch that wont tell me anything about how much fat i have. also keep in mind that this is trying to estimate a percentage of body % simply by estimating how thick layers of adipose tissue are in specific locations of the body. this estimate will always be highly variable because of how variable every other type of body mass is (all of the fat free mass). it will give you a ball park figure but its no dexa or body plethysmography

Fosho, yeah he did a pretty good job at grabbing plenty of adi tissue, but I was still skeptical. Thanks m8

They're pretty much crap. If it doesn't put a current through your body, it's probably not telling you anything :P

tbh even most of the "professional" measures are a little screwy. But they can get you down to under 2% accuracy. If you want better accuracy you need a pretty sweet machine.

On this topic: any recommendations for a good device? :)
