http://forums.d2jsp.org/topic.php?t=57770134&f=105A lot of people were asking about smudge and its rather hard to explain with words so I'm just going to try and give you as many resources that can show it as possible.
Thankfully there are some good ones out there so it is up to you to practice a lot and try to mimic what you see them do until you understand it.

Things To Look AtPochy Smudge VIDEO tut =
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M7RvFKe6Bxw for part 1,
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IQfF8Dm8zVc for part 2 (if you cant find it)
Firstly, this video is in Italian, i suggest if you can understand Italian just muting it. BUT this is still a great video for smudging, because it shows visually how he smudges this style, and i feel this is one of the most important parts of learning to smudge is seeing how its actually done.
The most important tut here imoPochy Smudge tut =
http://fav.me/d35eulbFor those of you who don't know, Pochy is one of the more famous smudge taggers currently and who always impresses me, this should be considered high level smudging there is a download to a pack including this at the bottom
N-95 smudge tutorial =
http://fav.me/d4a4zm8This is a simpler smudge style, i like it because it explains some of how he does it at the start and it shows the importance of combining. also at the bottom of the page is a link to some of the Pochy PSDs.
Pochy's Tagwall =
http://fav.me/d3fccoaThis shows a lot of different high level smudge styles, this is what you want to shoot for if you really want to become a great smudge artist imo.
N-95 Tag =
http://fav.me/d48cv53In this tag he tried to emulate Pochy's style and I want you to notice the difference in quality between his smudge and Pochy's. The grainyness, line thickness, and colors is an example of good mid level smudge but its clearly not as good as Pochy yes? Still good, but room for improvement
Smudger's Paradise Pack (including Pochy) =
http://fav.me/d35eq9rThis has 8 LRO psd's for smudge tags, and if you want to get better at smudging, I suggest spending time looking at all of them and seeing what the do layer by layer because that is a great way to see how higher level smudge is built up, it is not flat!!!
What Not To DoLow Quality Smudge Tag =
http://fav.me/d131y74This is an example of the style of smudging you should avoid. it is like beginner level smudge and i hope you can see why.
Another Low Quality Smudge Tag =
http://fav.me/d2iwgr7A great example of what not to do when going for high quality smudge is to use funky brushes, this guy uses some sort of floral/leaf smudge
also notice that even though the smudge has some color variety, it is still very flat and messy

Assignment1. Read the stuff in this post. Look at the tutorials and examples I posted. Watch Pochy Smudge Video
2. Don't worry, you have time.
3. Attempt to do the Pochy Smudge Tutorial and/or N-95's Tut, I'm going to assume you will have trouble with this, don't worry about it.
4. Open up the psd's from the psd pack and look through them
5. Try to do N-95's tut or Pochy's Smudge Tut again if you think you've got it and/or
5b. Make a smudge tag on your own with what you have learned
6. Post it here for cnc
The main goal is that if you want to get this stuff down, practice practice practice. For 99% of you it won't come instantly so don't expect to get it right away and then give up if you don't get it.
