In the longrun, it could be good for the Red Sox to lose out on the division title. Here's why:
The top seed in the AL is out of reach. Winning the division means a 2 or 3. In order to win the World Series, they are going to have to go through Houston. Winning the division means they would face Houston in a 7 game series. A 7 game series exposes the back end of your rotation, arguably one of the Red Sox weak points right now.
If they have to struggle down the stretch trying for the division but fall short, Sale could end up pitching one of the last games in the season. This could put him in line to pitch Game1 of the ALDS against Houston.
Our best chance to beat Houston would be a series in which we need only 3 wins and Sale pitches twice. Winning the division would make that scenario impossible.
so youd rather put yourself in a 1 game playoff coinflip? even if sale goes god mode, he then wont pitch until game 3 of a short series, so youll once again leave your rotational depth exposed, only in a worse spot.
or maybe i was just trolled, iunno
