I think he came back too soon. The team was winning so he could have taken more time to recover from surgery. It's either the healing process or perhaps this was just one thing too many for him to ever be even 95% again.

Players always have a down year after major surgeries like Karlsson had, Giroux is the most recent that comes to mind, the season after his hip surgery he was dogshit.
