Which modifiers can spawn on a given item
- A guide in how to determine it.

Introduction
Given the confusion about what mods can drop on certain items in classic I've decided to try and clear up some of the questions by making this guide.
I do not claim to have complete information so what I am posting is how I have understood the game mechanics over the years.

I have broken this guide into section to make it easier to understand.

Terms used in this guide
In this chapter you will find a brief introduction to the different terms used throughout this guide

In this guide we will need to do a test using a specific formula in order to determine what can and cannot spawn on a given item. For this test will will need the following terms:
  • qlvl - This is the quality level of the item e.g. martel de fer, battle hammer, exec etc.
  • ilvl - This is the item level which is determined by the level of the monster who dropped the item.
  • alvl - This is the most interesting part because this is what determine what monsters can drop and what they cannot drop. We will need to calculate the alvl of the dropped item and compare it to the required alvl for a given mod in order to determine whether or not the mod can spawn.
The formula for calculating alvl goes like this:

An example on how to calculate alvl
In this chapter you will find an example of how to use the numbers that are available to you in order to determine what can and cannot spawn on a given item.

Lets take an example using a Martel de Fer dropped by Mephisto on hell difficulty. Note that you can refer to the list at the bottom of this guide for the required numbers.

We know the following:
  • Mephisto on hell is level 76 thus making his drops ilvl 76.
  • The qlvl of a martel de fer is 53
  • The alvl required for 200%ed to spawn is 56
Lets put this into our formula:

if (76<(99-53/2))
then {alvl=76-53/2}
else {alvl=2*76-99}

Since 76 is higher than 99-53/2 we will use the bolded equation.

alvl=2*76-99
alvl=53

What this tells us is that mephisto will drop martel de fers with an alvl of 53. We already determined that we would need an alvl of 56 in order to get 200% ed weapons thus one will never get more than 180%ed on a Martel de Fer dropped by mephisto on hell difficulty.

When determining what can spawn on an item you simply pick the highest required alvl of the mods desired. Rare items can have up to 6 mods with 3 prefixes and 3 suffixes.

From this we are also able to calculate the required qlvl of an item to get 200% ed.

E.g. Mephisto on hell. In order for him to drop a weapon with 200% ed the item dropped cannot have a higher qlvl of:

We can then isolate qlvl/2 to be 20 = qlvl of 40. So Mephisto can drop 200% ed on weapons with a qlvl of up to 40.
