The thing is Süle and Badstuber are 2 entirely different kinds of players.... Badstuber is easily up there in the Top 5 of the world when it comes to modern CB skills like long passing and generally speaking of initiating plays from deep in their own half of the field. Badstuber is up there with the likes of Bonucci, Hummels and other.
Süle doesn't offer ANYTHING in that field, which makes me wonder why Bayern even signed him. Of course he is a great prospect, but he currently still is (and most likely will be for a long time to come) limited to being a strong CB relying on mostly physicality and a great timing with tackles. Süle is a great talent, but imo signing him is a step backwards with regards to tactical options and variability on the field. He doesn't offer anything that Martinez, Hummels or Boateng couldn't contribute to the defense, but lacks a lot they can.
i agree in general, but while possessing "modern" cb skills i always felt that badstuber was lacking "classic" defending skills and speed, even before all his injuries
call me old fashioned, but for me being a strong ball winner and battling against strikers is still the most important thing for a defender
if i look at the last 2-3 seasons there were quite a lot of games, where we lacked some good old scrappy defending
süle will surely improve is skills with the ball, training and playing with our boys
