The only problem I could see with this is that some new users may feel a bit "overloaded" with all this information being thrown at them at once. I do like the concept but maybe if there was a more subtle way to introduce them into all of it.

Its a good idea indeed. I have written a pm to myself with all the tips and links and advice i could think of, and I send it to ppl I talk in to joining the site. Would be easier if it was a common place for that.
