Unperm Explanation Guide by Epion5:

Introduction:

There were many dupes in existence before the 1.10 patch of Diablo II. Upon the passage of patch 1.10, all
duped items were permed. This is due to the fact that each individualistic item was given its own Identification code
after passing from the 1.09 patch to the 1.10 patch. An Item with its own Identification Code cannot disappear on you.
Although two of the same items possess identical ilvls, if their Identification codes are different, they will not disappear.

The Difference Between Perm and Legit:

Perm:
An item which was mass duped before 1.10, and now has its own identification number
(originally stems from a common original item)
Legit:
An item which is one of a kind, and has no other item like it existing in the game, based on its identification number
(not stemming from a common original item)

The Former Classic Perm Method:

The classic perm method was used up until patch 1.11, when battle.net rendered this useless.
The former perm method consisted of converting the duped items from the classic realm to the
expansion realm. This would give the item its own Identification code. Many people still claim
that this perm method works.
It does not.

Why There are Non-Ladder Dupes on Ladder:

Hackers infiltrate the system during the time battle.net initiates its ladder conversion.
These hackers are more commonly affiliated with the group who produced the bugged items
during the 1.09 patch. A massive amount of unperm items are transferred to the Ladder
Realm. No ladder duped item is perm. This is because these items did not pass
from patch 1.09 into the 1.10 patch. The only perms in existence reside on the non-ladder realms.

Example:

I have an 08 valk, and I constantly save and exit games. This is an ilvl 90 123 defense valk. I claim to have been
in thousands of games with this item, and it has never disappeared. This, although theoretically does not mean
it is completely perm, almost ensures it is perm. The valk I possess is perm because its Identification code differs
from every other valk of 123 defense ilvl 90 within the game. If you do happen to cross a valk with the same Identification
code, either your item, or his item will disappear.
Leaving the game last will cause your item to disappear.
(If he is in the game with you)
If his item's identification code is recorded first on the server, yours will disappear when you leave the game.
(If he is on the same server as you, and leaves the server first)

Common Misunderstandings:

I clash test my valk with another, and it did not poof; therefore, it is perm.
This is not correct. There are many unperm Identification codes for many valks.
You simply clash tested against a valk which does not have the same Identification code as your own.

A Person In Game with You:

You each have a valk in your inventory. The first person will perm out.
You will then immediately save and exit the game. This does not always work due
to the plethora of Identification codes for duped items.

You Away From Keyboard in Game:

When battle.net tests for dupes, it scans not only the game, but the server you are currently located on.
This scan occurs when a player exits a battle.net game.
(The game can be any game on your server; they do not need to be in your game)
The identification code is stored on the server. When you choose to leave the game,
your item will disappear. This will only occur if the Identification code of your item
is the same as the one(s) currently being stored on the server.

Test Methods:

Sit in a game for extended periods of time. Save and exit, and re-enter the game.
This is the best method of testing. You will constantly switch servers, and battle.net
constantly scans the servers as explained above.

Clash test your valk with another valk. This can be very ineffective at times. Have the
person perm off of you, then leave the game after they leave, without perming. This method
is frowned upon due to the many different Identification codes of unpermed items.
When the 123 defense ilvl 90 valk was duped in 1.09, there were a plethora of unique perm
Identification codes which passed through the patch; however, the hackers at that time
immediately began to dupe the valks which had passed through perm.
These duped Identification codes became known
as unperm throughout the past patches and the current patch. There were some valks
which were not duped, and these retained their original Identification code, making them perm.

Other Notes:

All items duped after patch 1.10 cannot be perm.
Do not trade for Items if you are uncomfortable with the seller.
A mass amount of Forum Gold can be lost due to Ignorance.
Hopefully we have diminished that ignorance through this Guide.
This Guide applies to all items existing within Diablo II.
