Magnus Carlson doesn't just have a better memory than other players. There are a lot of other factors.
I agree with you that 960 is an upgrade, but all it does is remove the need to memorize openings. Chess isn't currently just memorization, that's a misunderstanding of the difference between 960 and the current norm.
Our current chess depends heavily on pattern recognition, temperament, making good decisions, calculation, etc.
