Just started playing with Sunshine server on my laptop and Moonlight client on LG webOS and Nvidia Shield. I'm pretty blown away by the performance after simple setup and default configs. Was seeing 30ms latency on TV and 11MS through Shield setup for streams.

Wondering what host machine setup people recommend? I'd like to build out a dedicated host server for game streaming on intranet and hosting a Plex Media Server. Wondering what hardware I would need to minimize latency on the host machine and get 4k streams in most titles.

Also, wondering if there is a better client device then shield for decode speeds.

Bonus, would want to run headless in VM. Not up to date on hardware, but virtualization should be able to take advantage of GPU directly if I had windows VM with Sunshine and Steam?

Budget is like $2-3kUSD.

Not sure if this would bottleneck, but I've got Asus rtax88u router

Here are the parts I've chosen so far for this rig. Again, I'm trying to optimize for low latency 4k streams. Seems like 4080 Super might be the card that lives in this, seems new card details will be announced next week so holding back. Else, if 4090s become magically obtainable and cheaper due to Super release, then might pickup used 4090.

  • Silverstone Tek SG11B - Micro Atx (already ordered)
  • CORSAIR RM850e - Modular PSU
  • Asrock B650m PRO RS - AM5 socket, M.2 gen 5 slot, DDR5 up to 7200MHz
  • AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D - AM5 socket
  • Noctua NH-L12S - 70MM vertical clearance should fit in case describing 83MM CPU cooler room.
  • G.SKILL Flare X5 32GB (2 x 16GB) 288-Pin PC RAM DDR5 6000 (PC5 48000) F5-6000J3038F16GX2-FX5
  • SAMSUNG 980 PRO SSD 1TB, PCIe 4.0 M.2 2280
  • HDMI Dummy Plug 4K@60HZ - for when headless

~$1030 all parts except GPU
~$1000-1200 for GPU budget (could go higher, not paying scalper rates though)
~$400 - might utilize a Steam Deck as a docked Moonlight client if 4k decode latency sub ms.
