Democracy is premised upon a shared civil spirit, a mutual agreement of the citizenry to abide by elections to determine their collective will. The only alternative to democracy is to have a minority subject the people to its will, by force. That comes in all manners, be it corporatocratic dystopias, communist dictatorships, dynastic monarchies, whatever. In the absence of democracy, might makes right. We see it right now around the world. Ukraine had a democracy, a barely functional one still torn between the push and pull of imperialist foreign powers. But that democracy was overthrown by force and the result was bloodshed, a decade of warfare to carve out lines of control, self governance and becoming vassals to their respective masters.
Nothing holds more a proximate threat to the fabric of American democracy than the 2024 results being rendered illegitimate by democrats seeking to avert a free and fair election. If Trump gets pulled off ballots or thrown in prison by his political rivals, who then squeeze out a "win" with Biden channeling Saddam Hussein, it has the very real potential to balkanize America and end the union. Nobody in America actual gave a flying shit about some LARPers and chuds strolling around the capitol taking selfies. It made no impact to the health of our country, no matter how much the left wants to screech about it. We've survived a dozen race riots in the past hundred years more damaging than that nonsense. But what we've got right here is an actual threat to democracy.
