This is a classic hymn written by a man who lost much in his life. Joseph M. Scriven originally wrote it as a poem for his grieving mother and published it anonymously for his fellow brothers and sisters in Christ. Scriven lost two women, whom he loved dearly, shortly before he was going to marry them; and he was no stranger to sorrow, loneliness, and learning who his one true friend is.
