because restricted exhaust = restricted intake. You can only suck in as much air as you can push out. You literally make more power with an open exhaust. You also burn more fuel in the process (obviously). Factory exhaust systems are restrictive for emissions and fuel economy, not performance. Install an exhaust cutout so you get the best of both worlds, then you're not stuck with a straight pipe but you can switch between straight pipe and stock exhaust on the go. It's like 200 bucks off ebay, and even if you suck at welding you'll manage. If welding isn't an option there's always exhaust cement + tape + clamps
