Have any of your guys heard of 23andme.com? Apparently, they do genetic tests for just 99 bucks. I ordered one because I'm really interested in what sort of ancestry I have. However, I'm kind of nervous that they might find stuff wrong with me. What are your thoughts on genetic testing?

Genetic research is, to me, the epitome of success and failure in the scientific world. It's the beginning and end to everything that makes us distinctly human.

Personally, finding out where my genetic material came from and all of its eccentricities would be a humbling and (perceptively) life altering experience. Most beneficially so, I might add.

probably will just Identify a few SNPs... do a little statistics (sort of like crime labs) and say:

"hey Mr. Average White guy, you look like you carry this polymorphism so you're X% more likely to develop XYZ disease."
(they analyze common sites for certain genes and factor in genetic heterogeniety and polygenic heredity and such so you come to a REASONABLE conclusion based on probability).

i watch the human project i think it was called on nat geo a few months ago, they also sell these kits but theirs is like 200$ lol i want to get one also im curious to see. im a real american mutt

I think its a great idea even if they do find something wrong. It could help you determine your ancestry as well as warn you about any conditions you or your children may experience in the future.

This is the part of it I find awesome, being able to test for many of the genetic diseases and even genetic predispositions to diseases is clearly beneficial.

some doctors will recommend it during pregnancy if there appear to be any issues or complications. otherwise, why stress yourself over the chance you may or may not have inherited?

I know you republicans don't like the idea of preventive care, but finding things early enough usually equates to something being a bajillion times more treatable and cheaper to treat. Plus potentially curable.
