But yes, generally you need one for casters on this version of LS

If you are dying too fast, next time you begin climbing (i do not suggest rerolling at this point in time) get about 2-5 points into vita, this will give you some bonus hp per level which can often be useful, on my weller i use 2 vita to give a small boost.

Seems you put 10 points to vita, not a bad choice to be honest.
Defense is a poor way for a magician to survive longer, get a wild heal/heal/focused heal and equip it on the alternative charm (NOTE ONLY EE WORKS ON THIS (EE = enhanced effect)) AND it only works with 50% effectiveness (i.e only halve of the normal power of the spell)
lets say you're using this charm:
Magical wind X
Level Req: 35
Spell Damage: 79 to 356
Mana Cost: 95
+72% Enhanced Effect
and this in alternate:
Mythical focused heal VI
Level Req: 15
Heals: 57 to 69
Mana Cost: 55
+60% Enhanced Effect
+2 Extra Item Slots
+1 to 12 Life per Attack
+1% Quick Draw
+1% Heal Mastery
ALL the stats on the alternate will not work excluding EE, so it is the same as this:
Magicall focused heal VI
Level Req: 15
Heals: 57 to 69
Mana Cost: 55
+60% Enhanced Effect
and its only at 50% so a heal of roughly: 29 to 35.
