Considering how cheap staves are at the moment.

and how cheap dex gear always is and how cheap leather armors are because they don't get used.

I'd go with a melee cata rogue using staffs.

my personal opinion.

Yep but if you buy clubs for your fighter, you can use them for paladin also, with staves you gotta wait for monk.

Either way you're still screwed on Samurai... but that's assuming that you pass

Depends on what you want to achieve with your character and how effective you want to be.

From some of the posts mentioned earlier... you may go for a Healing Mage... (even though they are not cheap)

Find the cheapest Staffs / Daggers at each level to help you help others in catacombs
Robes are cheaper than Padded Robes... again look for the cheapest combination in each level group

Charms are your worse nightmare for this build... Heal / Focus Heal are the 2 main ones to concentrate on ... with EE
Any Charm (Fire/Light/Wind ETC) with the best HM for Cheap should be cheap also

This is pure INT build with junk gear

Other option... my personal favourite is Barb...
Choose your Main weapon Preference and check prices... if you can not find something cheap... buy cheapest in-between weapon to cover those levels. Same goes for Chain/Plate armor... and Stat charms...

When the tough get tough... re-roll your character and start again from scratch... but not if you reach level 45+ of course.

EDIT: Even if you are playing SC... do not let your character die unless you have created a welling mage and do not care for profs.
